September 09, 2009 - Drive To Graskop

We have finally arrived in South Africa!

Before heading out, we purchased a South African SIM card for Sami's phone. We then picked up the car, after having spent about an hour and a half sorting out our canceled (not by us!) reservation.

We had Nando's - where Gen's rediscovered her love for the spicy Portuguese chicken! - while downloading the Southern Africa GPS maps. It was a tight finish to download the maps before our wireless internet subscription ran out!

We were about to leave for Graskop early enough to catch the views on the way while the sun was up, but then ran into problems with the ATMs. Both our cards kept being denied when trying to take out money. It took an hour and all of our phone credit only to find out that neither of us can take out money, because of Sami's chipped card and because of Gen's permanently blocked card. RBC unblocked Gen's card for one transaction, which allowed us to take out some cash. We replenished our phone credit and finally headed out, two hours behind schedule.

Sami had to relearn how to drive on the other side of the car and street - quite the adventure!

We made it out of Jo'burg alive, but we, of course, missed all the views on the way because of our delayed departure. Instead we had a scary drive through extremely foggy mountains.

On the way, we saw a large truck which just had an accident, nothing to reassure us. But thankfully, we got to Graskop safe and sound. We opted for a comfortable double room at ValleyView Backpackers instead of camping because of the cold and rain.

To celebrate our being alive, we treated ourselves to a nice dinner of Portugese rump steak and egg at Canimanbo. Quite expensive, but definitely much appreciated!
