September 07, 2009 - A Day in London

We arrived in London in the morning, and made our way to a hostel which we read about online called Astor Victoria Hostel (near Pimlico Station) to check in and drop off our bags.

The first priority was to find a decent restaurant to have some fish and chips. We found a nice one to sit in, but Gen did not appreciate having to wait so long for service, so we went to another restaurant and ate there. The fish was terrible! It had no taste and we were highly disappointed.

Add to that the weather was very dreary (in typical London fashion) and the overall feeling was quite depressing. Nevertheless, we trekked on to see some of the sights farther north east. We saw Buckingham Palace (again not very impressive from the outside, and we didn't feel like paying the exorbitant amount of money to go inside, so we took photos of the photos located on the outer gates...).

We walked down the "birdcage" street and made our way to Parliament Square, where we saw Big Ben, The London Eye, and plenty of double-decker buses and classic English taxi cabs.

As we crossed the bridge to see the London Eye we saw the Salvador Dali Universe exhibition. Definitely something Sami wanted to check
out, and he was able to convince Gen to go with him when he found a two-for-one coupon in the map we got at the hostel. The exhibit was
pretty amazing, we didn't know a lot about Dali before going, so it was fun to learn about his life and his various types of work. It reminded us a lot of the Picasso Museum we visited in Barcelona two months ago.

After the exhibit we tried to walk around the area to find our location, but ended up taking one of those classic taxi cabs back to the hostel. We planned to rest our feet and then go out for dinner, but fell asleep instead. We didn't wake up until it was time to go back to the airport and make our way to Doha. Frankly, we weren't very disappointed as we were not very impressed with this dreary old town! We're sure it would have been more enjoyable had we met some friends and had some sunshine.
